¿Policía = Migra?
¡Decimos No!

Attorney General John Ashcroft está desarrollando la interpretación legal que reconocería la autoridad de las policías para hacer cumplir leyes de inmigración. La policía no necesitaría entrenamiento de la Migra, ni firmar un acuerdo con ellos tampoco. La policía podría detener, cuestionar y arrestar gente solamente porque no se tiene documentos. Dicha interpretación legal es parte de "la guerra domestica contra el terrorismo" -pero en este caso, la comunidad inmigrante y nuestras libertades y derechos fundamentales están en riesgo.

Muchas organizaciones en la comunidad han formado una coalición para poder evitar los impactos de esta decisión en nuestra comunidad. Grupos como SWARM, El Pueblo Unido Contra la Violencia, el Centro Legal para la Gente del Sur de Arizona, la Unión de Arizona para las Libertades Civiles, sindicatos, AFSC y otros se encontraron a fines de mayo para planear estrategias efectivas para proteger nuestra comunidad. ¡Por lo tanto, necesitamos su voz y ayuda!

Nuestra mensaje es sencillo: esta decisión prevendría a mujeres indocumentadas reportar violencia domestica y asaltos sexuales e incrementaría el perfil racial y los abusos a inmigrantes. A la vez que destruiría la confianza entre la comunidad latina y las policías. Los departamentos de policía ya están sin recursos para trabajar efectivamente con la comunidad y a enfrentar el crimen; con un cargo de este tipo, la situación empeoraría.

Demandamos que las ciudades, condados, y los departamentos de policía acuerden que no van a hacer cumplir las leyes de inmigración. Además, queremos un mecanismo comunitario para monitorear este acuerdo. Y es muy importante que toda la comunidad conozca sus derechos cuando lo detiene la policía y la migra. Hightened Militarization in Chiapas

Since Saturday, dozens of military trucks, full of soldiers and arms arrived in the area of San Cristobal de la Casas, where the peace commissioner Luis Alvarez finished a two day visit. There was no official information about the military movements, but large lines of vehicles have been observed in recent days entering the city & on the highway. On Sunday, 40 units were counted in just one convoy. The movements followed the liberation last Wednesday of EZLN political prisoners, and while the Supreme Court is considering the claims of more than 300 local indigenous governments against the indigenous "reforms" of the Fox government, the resolution of which is expected in June.

In the last few weeks all the EZLN communities are reporting incursions, threats and increased military movements in the zone of conflict. Many have issued calls for international assistance:

"Brothers and Sisters… The federal army is continuing its patrols, and they are increasing in number, we have seen many soldiers passing through the Selva to the Altamirano barracks, Ocosingo, and every time they pass by they park for more than half an hour in front of our "New Dawn of the Rainbow" Commercial Center. There is much movement by the military and the Public Security police, by tanks and large new army vehicles.

We are not only worried about this harassment, we feel that the governments are once again preparing war against our communities. This is a sign that our situation is going from bad to worse, there is military harassment, there is division and there is violence.

There is indeed money for this military movement, much money in order to destroy us.

In response to all of this, we are saying that we are here, and we shall continue resisting with dignity, because our indigenous demands are just, and we are right.

We are calling on our brothers and sisters to bear witness to the incidents which we are seeing here and which all of our communities are suffering.
